Gower, west of Swansea, became the first area in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the quality of the scenery is matched by the challenge of the golf courses for all handicaps here.
Amongst the must-plays are Clyne Golf Club, a challenging course with 360 degree panoramic views; Pennard Golf Club, also known as the ‘links in the Sky’; and Langland Bay Golf Club, not a links course but affording the most breath taking coastal views to a membership that includes local girl Catherine Zeta Jones and her husband Michael Douglas.
Further west you will find Ashburnham Golf Club, a traditional links golf course with a celebrity membership; and Machynys Golf Club, one of Wales’ youngest clubs founded in 2005 and a Nicklaus designed course. The lovely county of Pembrokeshire is home to the picturesque, medieval walled resort of Tenby and the oldest established golf course in Wales (1888), with a natural links course that just has to be played.
