About Woodlake Park Golf & Country Club
When Doug Wood and his sons, Mike and Howard, set out to design and build a golf course on their dairy farmland overlooking Gwents vast Llandegfedd Reservoir in 1992 they could scarcely have hoped for such a satisfactory result so soon.
They opened 18 holes in August 1993 and within five years Woodlake had a reputation as one of the best inland courses in Wales. A major part of their success is the quality of the greens which were constructed in accordance with standards laid down by the United States Golf Association and the putting surfaces alone attract golfers from far and near.
This attention to detail was observed throughout the course which is very well drained and Woodlakes setting, with views of the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains, is matched by the quality of the golfing challenge the Wood family have created.
The demands of the 6,400 yard course have attracted many good golfers to become members. Out of a membership of over 500, no fewer than 80 have single figure handicaps. In 2001 Woodlake Park was the venue for the Wales V England Schools Championship which Wales won for the first time in its history.
